This thrilling program includes famous “Labyrinth” works by Locatelli (for violin) and Marais (for viola da gamba), as well as Couperin’s portrayal of Corelli’s journey to Parnassus, Corrette’s meditation on solitude for bassoon, and a virtuosic programmatic keyboard solo by Forqueray.

Featuring the female composer Leonora Duarte, as well as Flemish and Dutch composers including Hacquart and Schop, this program portrays the exquisite intimacy of this genre, with projected images of paintings by Vermeer, Rubens, Frans Hals, and others as a backdrop to the music.

In this early period of violin repertoire, the technical exploration of the instrument’s possibilities, as well as the formal experimentation of the period were thrilling, and reflected the dramatic upheaval of Europe coming out of a time of major plagues and the trauma of the 30 Years’ War.
